A hotel is a building that agreed to take strangers overnight. The interesting ones argue about the terms.
One hands the whole ground floor to a curator. One deletes the bedroom and rebuilds it as a berth. One puts a gaming floor under a thousand bedrooms and still has to make breakfast work. One is carved out of river ice in December and is water again by May.
Putting them on the same site is the point. Read across the four and the ordinary hotel stops looking inevitable.

Paragraphs, not spec sheets.
Every property here gets continuous prose: what the building was, what the rooms ask of you, what happens in the shared spaces, and who the place actually suits. There is no facilities table and no score out of ten, because both formats flatten precisely the differences this index exists to describe.
Facts are kept general and true to character rather than precise to the decimal. Room counts get refurbished, restaurants close, seasons move. A number written here today would be quietly wrong within a year, and a wrong number is worse than an honest description.
Nothing on this site is sold, ranked or rewarded. There are no affiliate links, no sponsored entries and no advertising placements inside the editorial text. Hotels are chosen because they make an argument worth reading.
Before you travel
Treat every entry as a reading list, not a brochure.
Ice hotels exist for a few months and are rebuilt to a new design each winter. Capsule hotels often separate floors by gender and enforce rules that are not obvious from a photograph. Art programmes rotate. Casino resorts change their restaurants and their entertainment schedules season by season.
