Merovale covers four kinds of hotel and nothing else. Sixteen properties, four to a category, each written as prose by an editor with no financial relationship to any of them.
Why these four categories
Art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels are not a natural family. They sit in different countries, different price brackets and different centuries of hotel-keeping. What they have in common is that each one takes an ordinary assumption about hotels and refuses it: that the walls are neutral, that a guest needs a private room, that a hotel is only for sleeping, that a building should last.
Reading them together is more interesting than reading any one of them alone, which is the whole reason this site exists in this shape rather than as another general hotel directory.
Geography
Merovale is deliberately geo-neutral. It is not a national guide and does not write from the perspective of any one country. Properties are wherever the category actually lives — capsule hotels cluster in Japan, ice hotels sit above the Arctic Circle, the casino hotels covered here happen to be Canadian — and the writing does not pretend to local residency anywhere.
How entries are researched and written
Entries are compiled from each hotel's own published material, its architects and operators where relevant, and general reporting about the buildings. They are then written as continuous prose rather than assembled into a table, and they are kept general on purpose: character, structure, atmosphere and fit, rather than a room count that will be stale by next season.
Nothing here is a review. There are no scores, no stars, no rankings and no user submissions. Where a property has an obvious trade-off — a location that requires a car, a partition that does not reach the ceiling, a season that lasts three months — that trade-off is stated plainly in the entry rather than buried.
The casino category, specifically
The four casino hotels here are described as hotels: rooms, service, food, the building and its setting. A gaming floor is treated exactly as a spa or a theatre would be — a facility on the site, mentioned once, not the subject of the writing. Merovale carries no gambling promotion, no operator advertising and no incentive of any kind to gamble.
Independence
No hotel pays to appear on this site and no hotel can pay to be removed from it. There are no affiliate links, no booking commissions, no sponsored entries and no advertising inside the editorial text. If that ever changes it will be disclosed at the top of the page it affects.
